De Nederlandse regering is sinds jaar en dag trots op zichzelf vanwege de open cultuur, de sociaaldemocratische traditie en het poldermodel. Officieel is Sint-Maarten sinds 2010 een autonoom land binnen het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, maar in werkelijkheid wordt haar autonomie en visie op zelfbeschikking bedreigd. Door vanuit Nederland toezicht te willen houden op alle begrotingen van Curaçao, Aruba en Sint-Maarten voor de komende tien jaar in ruil voor een lening om de Irma en Corona crisis te overwinnen, draait de Nederlandse regering de klok terug naar een beproefd klassiek model van koloniale overheersing.
Het Ministerie Buitenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK) gebruikt doelbewust termen als ‘corruptie’ en ‘hoognodige bezuinigingen’. Daarmee wordt het aloude narratief van ‘een rommelig en onvolwassen eiland dat blijft nemen’ gevoed, terwijl dit populistisch taalgebruik niet strookt met de werkelijkheid. De democratisch gekozen parlementen van Sint-Maarten, Curaçao en Aruba worden nu overstemd door een externe staat over hun interne aangelegenheden.
Sint-Maarten is een jong land onder leiding van een vrouwelijke premier, iets dat in het 'liberale' Nederland nog steeds onmogelijke opgave blijkt. Het meest recente pakket aan strenge maatregelen van de Nederlandse regering kan betekenen dat de ontwikkeling en het herstel nog verder worden belemmerd. Door de toekomst van dit eiland vast te ketenen aan een schuldenberg probeert de Nederlandse regering systematisch een neokoloniale heerschappij op te leggen.
Tijdens het interview komen we er ook achter dat de Nederlandse premier (tot nu toe) weigert aan tafel te zitten met de premiers van Sint-Maarten, Curaçao en Aruba. Deze taak wordt gedelegeerd aan de staatssecretaris en niet eens aan de minister, en legt de minachting bloot van het Nederlandse kabinet voor de eilanden. Staatssecretaris Knops heeft zijn laatste voorstel om meer schulden te maken gepresenteerd als een graag of niet scenario. Premier Jacobs heeft daar het een en ander over te vertellen.

Anousha Nzume and Ebissé Rouw talk to them about the threatening humanitarian crisis and the fight for true equality within the Kingdom for Sint Maarten, Curacao and Aruba.
The Dutch government has long prized itself for its open-minded culture, social democracy and a governing model based on dialogue called ‘polderen’. In this exclusive episode of Dipsaus Podcast this world-famous self-observation is being challenged by the Honourable Prime Minister of Sint Maarten, Silveria Jacobs.
Sint Maarten is officially an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but in truth its vision on its development is being threatened. By imposing blanket supervision on all budgets of Curacao, Aruba and Sint Maarten for the next ten years in exchange for a loan for Irma and Corona crisis relief, the Dutch government is turning back the clock and inflicting a tried-and-true classic of colonial rule.
The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations is using dog whistle terms like ‘corruption’ and ‘austerity rule’ to push the narrative of ‘messy islands that just keeps on taking’. This populist talking point is however very far from the truth. The parliaments of St. Maarten, Curaçao and Aruba, which their populations democratically elected, are now being overruled by an external state parliament about their internal affairs.
For Sint Maarten, a young country spearheaded by a female Prime Minister, something that still remains a fantasy in “liberal” Holland, the latest measures imposed by the Dutch government could mean hampering its development. Shackling debt unto the future of this island effectively means that the Dutch government is systematically trying to impose a neo-colonial rule on the Island effectively turning back the hands of time.
During the interview we also find out that that the Dutch Prime Minister refuses to sit with the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten, Curacao and Aruba. This is delegated to the Undersecretary and not even the minister which goes to the show the disdain this cabinet shows towards this part of the Kingdom. Undersecretary Knops has presented his latest attempt to make the islands more indebted to The Kingdom as a take it or leave it scenario. And the Prime Minister Jacobs had a thing or two to say about that.
